What exactly is 'Konkani'?

Konkani is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by the Konkani people along the western coast of India. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution and the official language of the Indian state of Goa. The first Konkani inscription is dated 1187 A.D.

Konkani is a member of the southern Indo-Aryan language group. It retains elements of Vedic structures and shows similarities with both western and eastern Indo-Aryan languages.

What did the Konkani Community go through?

Konkani was confirmed as an official Indian language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution in 1992. Before that, it barely survived a ban by the Portuguese in the 17th century and then struggled immensely to have a separate identity from Marathi. This went on for generations until it was finally confirmed as one of the official languages.
